PE Americas will provide a free trial license for GaBi 4, including suitable data, for those who have signed up to do an EPD under The Green Standard’s EPD program. This trial license will be an agreement between the user and PE Americas for a defined period (not to exceed six months) and will include a stipulation that the user will employ PE Americas for the EPD verification process. At the end of the assessment period, the trial license will be invalid and the user will need to decide whether purchase a standard license to continue using GaBi 4.

Free LCA Software Advances Sustainability
Three organizations – Sylvatica, GreenDeltaTC, and The Green Standard – have partnered to create, and make public, free use of LCA software that manufacturers can run internally.  The software enables manufacturers who are doing LCA to publish, share, and use life cycle results with suppliers and customers, and gives purchasers access to better information that helps them to purchase more sustainably.  The ensemble of tools includes:
  • openLCA from GreenDeltaTC, which enables users to create full products LCAs, including calculation of life cycle inventories and calculation of life cycle impact assessments including multiple impact assessment methodologies. OpenLCA has been publicly released and is available for download from their website.
  • Earthster from Sylvatica, which is designed for collaboration on life cycle calculations with your supply chain as well as internal life cycle calculations. This is done through a web interface and optional web publishing of life cycle results for others to use. Earthster has not been publicly released, but is expected to be available before year end.
  • A data sharing bridge between these two software systems, developed by The Green Standard, to enable integration of product information from these programs and producing next generation product LCAs.
Small and medium sized companies, heretofore reluctant to pay for a full-scale product LCA will benefit from this open source system.  Using this software, manufacturers of any size can get a picture of where they stand in terms of global warming, water pollution, indoor air pollution, and all other forms of major environmental degradation.   It affords them the opportunity to make informed choices about how and when to reduce their importing in all 12 impact areas, as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency, that are determined to have the greatest negative effect.  Manufacturers can use this holistic information to make business decisions that affect their bottom line.
